Local Sports 4/29/25
The GPAC Baseball Tournament begins tomorrow, and the Morningside Pod will be held in Yankton due to Morningside currently playing without a home stadium.
Morningside is the top seed at #2. Also in the pod will be #3 Doane and #6 Northwestern. Doane and Northwestern will play in game one tomorrow, with Morningside and Mount Marty playing game two.
All games will be broadcast on KYNTV, with Mount Marty games also airing on KYNT. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM tomorrow, with game two set for 6:00.
Yankton Bucks Baseball travels to Sioux Falls this evening for a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Washington.
The Bucks are coming off a win last Friday night in Sioux Falls, where they shut out Roosevelt 5-0.
First pitch of game one is set for 6:00 PM this evening.
Yankton Gazelles Softball will make a trip to Mitchell this afternoon for a Class AA matchup with the Kernels.
The Gazelles are 2-6 on the year following a loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln in their last game. The Kernels are currently 4-4, coming off a loss to O’Gorman.
First pitch from Cadwell Park is set for 5:30 PM this evening.
Mount Marty is 8th in the GPAC Women’s Golf Champions following yesterday’s opening two rounds in Cairo, Nebraska.
The Lancers shot 675 as a team on day one. Kelsey Heath leads the Lancers individually, tied for 12th at 163. Abigail Greenhoff joins Heath in the top 20, as she is 20th at 167.
The final round of the competition will be held today at Centura Hills Golf Club in Cairo, Nebraska.
Yankton Track and Field has a varsity triangular in Mitchell this afternoon at Joe Quintal Field.
Yankton will face Mitchell and O’Gorman during the meet. Events are set to begin at 4:00 PM.
Yankton Gazelles Golf will be in Pierre this morning for an invitational at Hillsview Golf Course. Tee time is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
Yankton Bucks Tennis will host Lennox and Vermillion today for a triangular at Yankton High School.
Yankton will face Lennox at 11:00 AM and Vermillion at 3:00 PM. Lennox and Vermillion will square off at 1:00.
The University of South Dakota has announced that Head Volleyball Coach Leanne Williamson has signed a contract extension.
Williamson has the most wins all-time for USD, has led the Coyotes to five Summit League Championships, five NCAA National Tournament Appearances, and is a three-time Summit League Coach of the Year.
The Coyotes have had four Summit League Players of the Year, four defensive players of the year, four setters of the year, and two freshman of the year honorees under Williamson’s guidance.
The three-year extension will keep Williamson in Vermillion through the 2030 season. Williamson is entering her 12th year as Coyotes Head Coach. She currently holds a 231-101 record.
