Local Sports 6/13/25
Yankton Post 12 Legion Baseball will make the trip to Sioux Falls today for the 2025 Dakota Classic.
Thirty-six teams from six states and Canada are scheduled to compete in the four-day event. Yankton will play in the Sanford Field #1 pool with teams from Gillette, Wyoming, Hickman, Nebraska, and Papillion, Nebraska.
Yankton will play at 11:00 AM and Hickman at 4:00 PM this afternoon. On Saturday, Yankton’s lone game will be against Papillion South at 1:00 PM, and on Sunday, Yankton will face Omaha North at 1:00 PM.
All pool games are set to be held at the Sanford Sports Complex in Sioux Falls.
Ellia Homstad shot a 79 yesterday to take the top spot in the Girls’ 16-18 division of the South Dakota Golf Association’s Junior Tour event at Fox Run Golf Course.
Homstad was six strokes clear of the rest of the field, with 2nd place going to Alexis Nerison of Sioux Falls, who shot an 85.
In the boys’ 16-18 division, Yankton’s Elijah Larson finished sixth with a 77. Zach Greble of Sioux Falls won with an even-par 72.
A pair of South Dakota Coyotes Women’s pole vaulters earned All-American honors yesterday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
Freshman Anna Willis tied for 4th in the event, while Senior Gen Hirata placed 7th. Hirate earned her 6th All-American honor as a Coyote, tying Emily Grove and Helen Falda for the most all-time for USD in the NCAA Division I era.
Also competing for USD yesterday was Sara Reifenrath in the women’s 400-meter dash. Reifenrath, a Hartington, Nebraska, native, finished 20th in the prelims with a time of 52.72 seconds. Reifenrath was named an All-American Honorable Mention for her performance this season.
The Yankton Lakers remain undefeated in South Central League play with their 8-2 win over the Freeman Black Sox last night at Riverside Field.
Mitch Gullikson and Shugo Kondo recorded three hits each for Yankton. Dylan Rodgers picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings.
Trey Ortman led Freeman with two hits in the loss. Riley Tschetter added a double for the Black Sox.
Yankton’s next game is a road matchup with Menno on June 19th, while Freeman will host Lesterville on Sunday.
The Tabor Bluebirds shut out Wynot last night in South Central League play, taking an 8-0 victory.
Matt Brown finished 2 for 5 with a home run and four runs driven in for Tabor. Chase Kortan struck out six batters over six innings for the win on the mound.
Wynot was held to three hits as a team. Two from Nolan Ostrand and one by Jaelen Wieseler.
Tabor is off until June 19th when they host Lesterville, while Wynot returns to action on Sunday, at home against Crofton.
Lesterville picked up their 5th win of the season last night, defeating Menno 9-6 in Menno.
Ethan Wishon led the Broncs at the plate. Wishon recorded two doubles and four RBIs. Hunter Marting struck out four over eight innings for the win on the mound.
Brayden Sattler finished 3 for 4 for the Mad Frogs, including a pair of doubles. Doug Hall was credited with the loss.
Lesterville travels to Freeman on Sunday to take on the Black Sox, while Menno will play Irene on Sunday in a doubleheader.
